Safety Rules

Anyone working working in the Campus Machine Shop, whether with a staff member, in an organized Workshop, or as part of a course (e.g. Physics Field Session), must abide by the following safety rules:

Safety Glasses – safety glasses with side shields must be worn by anyone in the Shop area, even if they are not working with machinery or materials.  Sunglasses or prescription glasses are not sufficient.

Closed-toed Shoes – Closed toed shoes must be worn by anyone working in the Shop facilities.  Ordinary tennis shoes are sufficient.  Sandals, flip flops, Crocs, etc. are not.

Long Pants – Long pants must be worn by anyone working in the Shop facilities.

Jewelry – Anyone working in the Shop must remove jewelry, including rings and watches.

Long Hair – Anyone working in the Shop must control long hair by putting it up in a bun or similar.  Long pony tails are not permitted.  Long hair may also be controlled by a hat.

Clothing – No long sleeves are permitted when working in the Shop.  Rolling them up past the elbows is sufficient.  Tuck in shirts and remove ties.  Loose or flowing clothing, such as belts or straps, should be avoided.

Chuck Keys – never leave a key in the chuck or spindle of rotating equipment.  This includes wrenches or other tools.  A good rule is:  if a key is in the chuck, your hand is on the key.

Clamp Your Work – always clamp down your workpiece when using rotating machinery or powered hand-tools.

Hazards – Always report potential hazards, caused by you or someone else, to shop personnel.

Impairments – Never work with any kind of impairment.  This includes becoming drowsy due to common allergy, cold, or any other medicines.

Never work alone – No one is allowed to work alone.

Ask! – If you don’t know how to do something, or are unsure if what you are doing is correct, please ask one of the staff members.  We are here to help you.
